Bucs Hope to Continue Winning Ways
Blinn, NEO kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday
With a trek of more than 530 miles coming Saturday, Blinn College football coach Ronny Feldman and his Buccaneers are looking to carry last week’s momentum into their Southwest Junior College Football Conference opener against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEO).
The Buccaneers are coming off a 55-7 win over Southeast Prep Academy at Cub Stadium last Saturday.
“It’s always important getting the first win and the last,” Feldman said. “We did a lot of good things on both sides of the ball – the offense had a good day, and the defense had a good day.”
The defense contributed in a big way as it held the Spartans to 83 yards of total offense and an average of 1.3 yards per play. Sophomore linebacker Ryan Flannigan picked off two passes, one of which he returned for a 68-yard touchdown, and freshman defensive back Scott Middleton snatched another. Defensive lineman Kyle Holmes recorded three of the Bucs’ five sacks in the game.
Blinn’s defense will have to be just as stout against NEO (1-1) on Saturday. The Golden Norsemen are averaging 507 yards of offense through the first two weeks of the season. They’re led by running back Elliot Hawkins, a redshirt sophomore, who has run for 179 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.
NEO’s Anthony Kiefer has held the signal-calling duties on offense through the first two weeks. He is 15-of-30 for 166 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
“They’re playing really good football,” Feldman said. “It’s the first conference game, so that’s an exciting one to see who sets the tempo of the conference.”
Blinn (1-2) found its life against Southeast Prep as the offense torched the Spartan defense for 411 yards. It was the running game that wreaked most of that havoc as Jericho Worrell, Spencer Cowley and Klartel Claridy combined for 226 yards.
Saturday’s game will be the first of three consecutive road games for the Bucs, who won’t return to Cub Stadium until Oct. 12.
