Bucs face Southeast Prep in home opener Saturday

The Blinn College football team will look to bounce back from its season-opening loss Saturday when it hosts Southeast Prep in the Buccaneers’ home opener.

Blinn and Southeast Prep will square off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cub Stadium, located at 1600 East Tom Green St. in Brenham.

Blinn kicked off the 2012 football season Saturday with a 28-10 loss to second-ranked Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan. The game marked the first collegiate contest for most of Blinn’s roster, which includes 60 freshmen this season.

Freshman running back Donovan Williams led the Buccaneers with 59 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, and freshman quarterback Garry Kimble completed 10 of 24 passes for 115 yards. Kimble ran for an additional 57 yards as the Bucs finished with 262 yards of total offense.

Freshman wide receiver Vasquez Haynes led the Buccaneer receivers with three receptions for 60 yards, including a 46-yard grab.

Sophomore defensive back Demetrius Woodard led Blinn’s defense with seven tackles and freshman Braylon Cannon picked off a second-half pass.

Butler quarterback Billy Cosh threw for 232 yards and a touchdown and running back Dreamius Smith ran for 84 yards and a score as the Grizzlies totaled 366 yards of total offense.

Blinn has defeated Southeast Prep each of the last three seasons, including an 88-23 win over the Spartans last Fall. Southeast Prep is coming off a 42-21 season-opening loss to Independence (Kan.) Community College.

The Buccaneers will be without Feldman for that contest as he serves a one-game NJCAA suspension for the athletic department’s failure to file the proper paperwork after a player was ejected from last season’s Mississippi Bowl.

Per NJCAA rules, game officials must file reports with the athletic departments of both schools involved in the contest following an official game ejection. Upon receiving that notification, the affected school must in turn report that ejection to its regional director within one business day. Failure to do so results in a one-game suspension for that team’s coach.

At the time of the game, Blinn was uncertain whether the player had been officially ejected from the contest, and received no official report from the game officials indicating such. It was only after Blinn requested clarification last week that the matter was brought to the NJCAA’s attention.

“We were never informed that an ejection occurred,” Feldman said. “The rules state than an ejected player is immediately removed from the venue, and that never took place. Furthermore, no paperwork was filed with either athletic department.”

This is the first suspension of Feldman’s 35-year coaching career. Assistant coach Kurt Nichols will run the team vs. Southeast Prep.

“Blinn College is committed to following all NJCAA rules and our athletic department is taking steps to ensure such an oversight never occurs again,” said Athletic Director Scott Schumacher, who was named to that position in June.
