Bucs sweep Iowa Lakes in non-conference double-header
Sophomore Federwisch throws one-hitter
BRENHAM, Texas – After nine days off due to a pair of rain outs, the eighth-ranked Blinn College softball team shook off the rust with authority Friday afternoon.
The Buccaneers defeated Iowa Lakes 13-0 and 9-1 in a pair of five-inning mercy-rule victories at Hohlt Park.
Sophomore pitcher Kaci Federwisch threw a one-hitter in the opener, striking out five batters without granting a walk. She did it without her best stuff, coach Rick Church said.
“Her changeup was working fine, but she actually wasn’t as sharp as she usually is,” he said. “Kaci pitches better the more she throws and she hadn’t pitched in a while because of all the rain.”
Federwisch, the Region XIV Conference pitcher of the week last week, got plenty of offensive support, including a three-run homer by freshman Caitie Carney.
“She has enough power to finish with half a dozen home runs, just like a couple other people on the team,” Church said.
Leandra Maly, Kristina Davila and Brooke Riemann each went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and sophomore catcher Brittney Krchnak also drove in a run.
Freshman pitcher Shannon Sain improved to 8-0 on the season by winning the second game. Thomasina Garza blasted a home run, Tiffani McKnight went 2-for-3 and Shelbe Sterling went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win.
Iowa Lakes scored on two Blinn errors in the first inning before the Bucs responded with nine runs.
“They don’t seem to get flustered,” Church said. “If they make mistakes out in the field, they come right back in and hit.”
The win improved Blinn to 25-4 on the season. The club travels to Alvin Community College Saturday for a noon Region XIV Conference double-header.
