Turner scores 13 to lead Bucs past Western Texas
WACO, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneer women’s basketball team has picked up right where it left off. After winning nine of 11 games during the fall semester, the Buccaneers won their second consecutive game of 2012 at the McLennan Community College Classic here Saturday afternoon, defeating Western Texas 59-46.
The Buccaneers won their first game of the showcase over previously undefeated and 14th-ranked Hill College 75-60 on Friday.
Sophomore point guard Miki Turner (McArthur) scored all of her team-leading 13 points in the second half to lead the Bucs, but it was the defense that anchored Blinn’s effort.
“I think we have a pretty good team,” Blinn (11-2) coach Jeff Jenkins said. “We shot the ball really well Friday against Hill, and today our defense definitely kept us in it. We’re really athletic, we offensive rebounded well and today our defense was really, really good.”
Sophomore point guard Joslinn Douglas (Del Valle) keyed the Buccaneers’ defensive effort, holding the Lady Westerners’ leading scorer on the season, Breanna Burton, to just three points.
“I can’t say enough about what Joslinn did because it let Miki and Denise White and Rebekah Cluley stay out of foul trouble,” Jenkins said. “It doesn’t show up in the box score, but it was huge.”
Freshman forward Shaniqua Dogins (Rice Consolidated) scored 11 points and sophomore forward Valencia White (Conroe) reached double digits with 10 points. Cluley, a sophomore guard, added another eight.
“Our posts got a lot of offensive rebounds,” Jenkins said. “They did a good job on the offensive glass.”
The Buccaneers return to Region XIV Conference play Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. game against the Panola Fillies in Carthage, Texas, and travel to Houston to play San Jacinto at 2 p.m. Saturday.
