Mooney scores 22 in Buccaneers’ win
Blinn scores 19 of game’s first 22 points vs. Lon Morris
CARTHAGE, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneers jumped out to a 19-3 lead and sophomore guard Christie Mooney scored 22 points here Saturday afternoon as the Blinn women’s basketball team defeated Lon Morris College 66-60.
Mooney has been the Buccaneers’ most consistent scorer over the last two and a half weeks, scoring in double digits in four of the Bucs’ last five games. Saturday’s contest marked the second start of her career.
“She’s been our best player, without a doubt,” Blinn coach Jeff Jenkins said. “I think she’s gotten more confidence with every minute she’s played. She hits open shots, she drives to the hole – she’s playing very well.”
Blinn relied on its sophomore guards as Denise White scored 13 and Miki Turner scored 10. The Bucs’ posts battled foul trouble throughout the night, but freshman forward Breanna Barnett scored eight and fellow freshman Shaniqua Dogins added seven.
The win ended a three-game skid for the Bucs, who had to face No. 1-ranked Trinity Valley in two of those games.
“It was a good win on the road,” Jenkins said. “We’ve had a tough week and a half.”
Blinn is now 16-7 on the season and 5-7 in Region XIV Conference play, while Lon Morris fell to 15-11 overall and 7-7 in league play.
The Bucs host San Jacinto at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Brenham.
