For their efforts in securing Blinn College’s second volleyball national championship and first undefeated season, two players from this year’s Blinn Buccaneer volleyball team were selected to the Division I All-American team by the NJCAA.
Setter Jackie Gerig was named to the first team, while outside hitter Shelby Dickson garnered second team honors.
“Jackie and Shelby were instrumental in helping us achieve our ultimate team goal of winning a national championship, and are very deserving of the awards,” said head coach David Rehr. “We wouldn’t have the individual awards if not for the overall success of the team.”
Gerig, a sophomore from Normal, IL, finished third in the nation in assists with 1,137 (11.04 per set). She also finished with 81 kills and 32 aces, good for a 41% hitting efficiency. In 2010, she was selected as a second team All-American.
Dickson, a sophomore from A&M Consolidated, finished the season with 356 kills, 48 blocks and 266 digs. She was named the national tournament MVP on Nov. 19.
The Blinn volleyball program has had 14 All-Americans, 13 of those during the nine-year tenure of Rehr.
The Buccaneers finished the 2011 season with a perfect 38-0 record, capped off with a four set victory over No. 3 seed Western Wyoming Community College to earn the national title.
