Tyler snaps Blinn’s six-game win streak
Turnovers cost Buccaneers in 92-75 loss
TYLER, Texas – Tyler Junior College snapped the Blinn Buccaneer women’s six-game win streak here Saturday afternoon with a 92-75 Region XIV Conference victory.
Tyler scored 52 second-half points in a game that saw the two teams combine for 68 free throws.
“Not only did they shoot and make a lot of free throws, but we couldn’t stop them defensively,” Blinn coach Jeff Jenkins said. “We had a lot of turnovers that led to easy buckets.”
Keaira Arion scored a game-high 21 to lead the Lady Apaches.
Freshman forward Shaniqua Dogins scored 15 points to lead the Bucs, who had four players score in double digits. Miki Turner scored 14, Christie Mooney and Alycea Price each scored 10 and Denise White added eight.
Jenkins estimated the Bucs turned the ball over more than 20 times.
“For us to score 75 points with that many turnovers, we played fine offensively, but we struggle defensively against Tyler,” Jenkins said. “They’re very good.”
Blinn will host its sophomore night Monday when it faces Paris Junior College at 5:30 p.m. at the Blinn P.E. Building. The Buccaneers’ 10 sophomores will be recognized prior to the game.
It will mark the final regular-season game of the year. Jenkins said a win on Monday would mean the Buccaneers play Lon Morris in the first round of the Region XIV Tournament, whereas a loss would mean the Bucs play Paris in the first round.
The women’s portion of the Region XIV Tournament will be held March 8-11 in Tyler.
