Copperheads Strike Bombers

Coppell--The Brazos Valley Bombers nearly pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory, but came up short tonight in Coppell. All hope seemed to be lost for the Bombers as they trailed 8-3 after five innings, but the team rallied together and cut the lead to one run before eventually falling 8-7.

The Copperheads jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on Jason Zylstra after a sloppy first inning that included three walks, an error and a passed ball. After Coppell added two more runs in the fourth inning, Trey Sperring cut the lead in half with a two-run home run off Coppell’s Rett Varner. The Bombers seemed to be slowly gaining momentum, but they made two costly errors in the bottom-half of the fifth to put themselves behind 8-3. Down 8-4 to begin the eighth inning, the Bombers scored three runs and loaded the bases, but Charlie Aceto came into the game and took the fire out of the Bombers, as he got Tyler Huelsing to ground out to stop the comeback short. Aceto came back in for the ninth inning and calmly retired the Bombers to collect the save.

The Bombers left 12 runners on base in the game, walked six Copperhead hitters and committed three errors, which led to two runs for Coppell. After the game, a frustrated Bombers manager Brent Alumbaugh said, “11 hits in a wooden bat league should be enough for a win, but the walks and errors just killed us.” The Bombers showed resiliency in their comeback, but in the end it was not enough.

Cody Springer will be on the hill for the Bombers tomorrow in their Home Opener at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark, as they play Coppell in the third game of this four game series. The freshman hurler led Sam Houston State this past spring with a 3.21 ERA and will try to get the Bombers back into the win column. It will be Thirsty Thursday tomorrow at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark, which means $1 Beer and $.50 off Soft Drinks, so don’t miss out on a chance to see the Bombers Home Opener!
