Bryan-College Station, TX (June 25, 2008) – The Brazos Valley Bombers made two key additions today, as they added Texas A&M infielder Caleb Shofner and St. Louis pitcher Dave Sever. The players hope to bolster an already strong roster as the Bombers search for their first TCL Championship.
A redshirt freshman for the nationally-ranked Texas A&M Aggies, Shofner is no stranger to the Bryan-College Station area. He enjoyed an illustrious high school career at Midway High School in Waco, where he was a four-time All-State selection, compiled over 30 home runs and 180 RBI in his career, and set the school record his senior year with 60 RBI. He also led his team to the state playoffs all four years and won the state championship his junior year. Following his brilliant high school career, Shofner came to Texas A&M, where he was redshirted his first year. He spent last summer playing for the Weatherford Wranglers of the TCL and batted .229 with 17 runs and 6 stolen bases. He began this summer playing for the Laramie Colts of the Mountain Collegiate League and has batted .300 thus far, but decided to come back home to Texas to play for Brazos Valley. Shofner should be able to jump in and contribute immediately for the Bombers as they get ready for the stretch run of the 2008 season.
The addition of Sever to the Bombers bullpen may prove critical as the Bombers try to distance themselves from the rest of their TCL competition. At the University of St. Louis, he has been a vital cog in their rotation the last three years and compiled16 wins, which is fourth-most in St. Louis history. In addition, he was selected in the 21st round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, but opted to return next year for his senior season. He possesses a vast array of pitches and displays great control and poise on the mound.
Both players should be able to make immediate contributions for the Bombers this summer as they battle for the TCL Crown. They are expected to be in the lineup on Thursday, when the Bombers take on the East Texas Pumpjacks in the third game of the four game series. It will be Thirsty Thursday night at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark, featuring $1 Beers and $0.50 Soft Drinks. Come join the rest of the Bomber faithful as they cheer on the hometown Bombers!
