BRYAN -- Hoping to finish at the top of the Texas Collegiate League standings for the first time this summer, the Brazos Valley Bombers added a pair of players with firsthand experience when it comes to being number one.
Freshman Bo Bigham and Kyle Atkins of #1-ranked Arkansas look to bring youth and energy to the Bombers this summer as they make a run for the 2009 TCL Championship.
After opening eyes and begin selected as the Arkansas Player of the Year, Bigham entered the University of Arkansas with great expectations for the future. His senior season at Texarkana High School, Bigham hit .462, with 10 home runs and 12 doubles, despite being forced to hit left-handed the final month of the season because of a shoulder injury. He also demonstrated unbelievable plate discipline over the course of his high school career, as he struck out just 11 times. In addition to his baseball prowess, Bigham was an All-State football player twice at Texarkana High. Although he has only gotten 10 at-bats this spring, the middle infielder has a bright future ahead of him with Arkansas and the Bombers.
Atkins, who possesses fantastic speed on the base paths, expects to be a vital piece in the Bombers lineup as well. Like Bigham, he displays great potential and versatility that should come in handy this summer. The 5’11” outfielder was a four year letter winner in baseball, track and football at De Queen High School, which is just over 100 miles away from Little Rock, the state capital. He was named All-Conference in baseball three times and was also selected All-State as a senior after setting the school record with 35 stolen bases. Although he is being redshirted this spring, he expects to make large contributions for the Razorbacks in the coming years.
