Bryan-College Station, TX (March 31, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers announced today that they will be returning six key players from their 2009 team. Geoff Lomax, Casey Dykes, John Cannon, Drew Mason, Jesse Payne and Kyle Atkins return for the 2010 season ready to build on the foundation laid by last summer’s team.
Bombers owner Uri Geva was ecstatic about the signings, saying “With the experience and talent that these players bring to the table, they will lead the way and hopefully bring a TCL Championship to the Brazos Valley!”
Serving as the setup man last summer, Lomax was nothing short of spectacular, as he surrendered only two earned runs in over 19 innings to compile a 0.93 ERA. The sophomore from Hendrix also struck out 22 while limiting opposing hitters to a .207 batting average.
Dykes proved his versatility time after time, playing catcher, third base, shortstop and each of the corner outfield positions. His exploits were not limited to the defensive side though, as he also led the team with seven doubles and tied for the team lead with 19 RBI and 20 walks. Dykes is also batting .353 with 4 home runs on the season for the 18th ranked Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
Cannon looks to return to the team once again as the starting catcher after another spring of seasoning at the University of Houston. Last summer he led all Bombers catchers with 34 assists.
Atkins provides reason to believe he can be the Bombers next great leadoff hitter. While he only managed a .190 batting average, he proved adept at working the count, walking 17 times and also showed off his tremendous speed with seven steals in nine tries. Like most freshman, he struggled early on in the season, but started to pick up speed as the summer wore on.
Although he missed three weeks with a shoulder injury that limited his production early in the season, Payne displayed impressive range defensively at shortstop and raised his batting average nearly 80 points to .233 by season’s end. He tied with Dykes for the team lead with 20 walks, but also proved his resiliency at the plate, only striking out 20 times during the season.
Mason proved to be a versatile defensive player, playing both corner infield spots and at 6’4” and 246 pounds possesses the power potential to be a major run producer for the Bombers.
