For the second time this week the Bombers defended their first-place status by defeating the East Texas PumpJacks on their home field in Kilgore. Standout pitching and explosive defense lead Brazos Valley to their 12-1 victory, their eleventh of the season.
In the top of the second the Bombers opened up the action with a four run rally to take the lead. Hunter Melton got things started with a leadoff single, followed by a single from G.R. Hinsley where both runners were able to advance on a passed ball. Next, Horacio Correa hit a sac fly that brought in Melton for the first run of the night. Herb Romero reached first after being hit by a pitch, then a single by Alexis Mercado brought in Hinsley for run number two. After a walk from Miles Manning, Graham McIntyre also walked, which allowed Romero to come home. After a pitching substitution from the PumpJacks, the Bombers still couldn’t be stopped when Patrick McLendon brought in Manning on a single. The inning ended with the Bombers stealing the lead at 4-0.
In the top of the third, Brazos Valley extended their lead when Correa hit a double to left that brought in Melton, bringing the lead to 5-0. No more offensive action was seen in Driller Park until the top of the sixth when the Bombers extended their lead again. The first run was earned when Mercado slammed a double that brought in Romero, who had previously reached on a walk. Later, Brett Kauten came to the plate and launched a homerun over the right field wall to bring in both Mercado and Manning, who had reached after being hit by a pitch. The inning ended with the Bombers holding a safe lead at 9-0.
The excitement continued in the top of the eighth when Hinsley crushed the Bomber’s second three-run homer of the night to bring in McLendon and Kauten. The PumpJacks only run of the night came in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homerun. The Bombers wrapped up their 2-0 series in East Texas with the 12-1 win.
Pitcher Bryce Rutherford earned the win after throwing six complete innings with five strikeouts, only three hits, and no errors. Andrew Hohn came in for Rutherford in the seventh, throwing 1.1 innings with three hits and one strikeout. Jason Freeman rounded out the game for Brazos Valley with 1.2 innings pitched, one hit and two strikeouts.
