The local Christian band Crosswind, led by singer Denise Squier, performed a pregame, on field, concert that welcomed the many Bomber fans to Faith Night at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark on Saturday. The Bombers did their part and keeping the fans on their feet by winning a 5-4 contest over the visiting Acadiana Cane Cutters. Tonight’s victory clinched a two-game series sweep of the Cane Cutters and continues the Bombers’ claim on the final playoff spot with four games remaining in the season.
The Bombers relied on the same formula tonight that they had been using consistently over this four game winning streak: gutsy pitching, seamless defense and timely hitting.
Two-time TCL Pitcher of the Week Damien Rivera took to the hill tonight for the Bombers and pitched a solid outing, keeping the Cane Cutters at bay to allow his offense to break through for the victory. Rivera pitched eight innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two. Bombers’ closer Garrett Shepperd earned his tenth save of the season and is now in the record books as the Brazos Valley Bombers all time, single-season leader in saves.
The Bomber offense again scored early and came through in the late innings to secure the win. The middle of the order proved to be too tough this evening for Acadiana pitching. First baseman Trey Porras went 2-for-3, second baseman Brennyn Smith had stellar night going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored, and third baseman Christian Soberanes went 2-for-4 with what turned out to be the eventual game-winning base knock in the bottom of the eight inning.
The Bombers will now travel to Kilgore to open up a two-game series with the East Texas Pump Jacks on Monday, before returning home to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark on Wednesday for their final series of the regular season against the Victoria Generals. That series is sure to have much at stake as both the Bombers and the Generals are vying for the forth and final spot in the Texas Collegiate League playoffs. Wednesday’s game is Fan Appreciation Night at the ballpark, where ALL fans will receive FREE admission courtesy of TwinCityProperties.com and also the first one hundred through the gate will receive sixth and final installment of the Angry Birds bobblehead series.
