News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest classroom champion JeMarcus Ashley. The Calvert High School senior has a 3.46 Grade point average and ranks second in his class.
JeMarcus is the vice president of the senior class, a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and the Calvert High School Band. He is a referee for Little Dibblers and also active in FFA. He placed sixth in the hog show at the San Antonio Livestock Show.
"Exceptional young man...I think he has a great career ahead of him. I first recognized his talent when he came here in the seventh grade. He's real sharp, highly intelligent, and stays on task...not hard to keep focused...so I see a bright future ahead for him."
Athletically, JeMarcus plays football and basketball and runs track and cross country. He was named the District MVP and Second Team All State Quarterback in 2009. He's also received Academic All District honors in both basketball and football.
"He brings a lot of leadership to our team, for one thing. I don't know what I'd do without the kid. He's one of the hardest working kids, the most dependable, you don't have to worry about anything with that kid...he's one of the best kids we've had in my three years here, from football, to basketball, all the way through track.
"Everyone wants to be successful. Sometimes you do have to do more than others. You have to get up in the morning, you have to sacrifice the normal things of a normal teenager, just so that you can be successful. Calvert, being very small and really not being known for anything, myself and my fellow classmates felt that it was our duty to be obliged to bring this school to higher standards and that's what we strive for as far as grades, in the classroom, as well as athletics. We want to be the best and that's what we strive for...we want to be known.
JeMarcus plans on attending the University of Houston and studying pharmacy.
Congratulations to JeMarcus Ashley of Calvert High School. This week's News 3 Sports Classroom Champion.
