News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest classroom champion Carina Bernal. The Somerville High School senior has a 3.69 Grade point average and ranks 3rd in her class.
Carina is senor class president at Somerville High, as well as vice president of the National Honor Society and Interact. Carina is also a drum major and plays the flute in the Somerville High School Band and participates in UIL One Act Play. Academically, she was also named biology & geometry student of the year.
"She's involved in so many different things. Every time there's an announcement for a certain field trip or a club to go meet she's always going. She's just a very well rounded student."
Athletically, Carina is the captain of the 2009-2010 tennis team, which for the past two years has placed 10th in the state. As a singles player, Maria was recently named first in the district in Tennis as well. On the court, in the classroom, and in the band, Maria always leads, though not in the traditional way.
"Carina is kind of one of those silent leaders. She's not very vocal. She's kind of shy, quiet, reserved… But she, really, definitely leads by example. She's always on time… She's got great strokes, and she's always encouraging to the other players."
For Maria, though, leadership is all about self-confidence.
"I always try to build myself up and not bring myself down, and being a leader really helps... If anyone needs help with anything I'll always be there,m and they know I'll always have their back."
Carina plans on attending Texas A&M University to obtain a major in nursing.
Congratulations to Carina Bernal of Somerville High School. This week’s News 3 Sports Classroom Champion.
