News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest Classroom Champion Yesenia Nieto. The Huntsville High School senior has a 3.9 Grade Point Average, and she's currently ranked in the top 10% of her class.
Yesenia is a member of the District Champion, Lady Hornet Soccer team. She's also the lead dancer in the Ballet de Folklorica. Yesenia is very active at her school...She's a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Student Council, Science Club and the Debate Club. Yesenia's also very with mentoring, tutoring, and volunteering at the local Animal Shelter.
"Yesenia has great organizational skills and is highly prioritized. When she has a game late at night she tries to get all her work done. I know especially for my class; before she leaves for the day. Because once on the field she's all soccer, once in the classroom she's all student. So she takes care of it before she leaves. She has come in during lunch and made up things during lunch, or got a little bit extra of that one on one, that tutoring. Let me have another few minutes in the cat and make sure I know where everything is. So she's really really good at organizing."
"Yesenia's been a starter for all 4 years of her high school career. I first got to meet her in seventh grade in middle school soccer and knew she would be a valuable resource to the team. I know her mom drives her, and that's important to her. She just has a lot to look forward to. She's been accepted to A&M, and that's been a dream of hers since I've known her...Is getting into A&M, and that's what she's been working towards this whole time."
"Being a student athlete, it does has it moments of difficulty. But I've been doing it every since I was little. So from dance shoes at one point and then soccer shoes to another and back and forth...You just learn to juggle things as you grow older and it just becomes easier. I mean it does have its perks. Being a leader, you do take pride in being a leader. You're young, and you just get the opportunity to show others that you are able to do things that maybe they can't do. And so your the role model in a sense for them."
After high school, Yesenia plans on attending Texas A&M University and majoring in Animal Science.
Congratulations to Yesenia Nieto of Huntsville High School. This week's News 3 Sports Classroom Champion!
