News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest Classroom Champion, Michael Gelner. The Yoe High School senior has a 4.0 GPA and is currently the valedictorian of his class.
Michael is currently the captain of the football…And he also participates in track, golf, basketball, and baseball at Yoe High. Michael was a class 2A State Champion in football last season. He was also 1st Team All-District as an Outside Linebacker. He was selected to the Academic All-District in track, golf, and baseball, and basketball teams. Academically, Michael's a member of the Czech and German Club, FFA, FCA, the National Honor Society, Student Council and the Leo Club. He was commended for his performance on the TAKS test and he received honors awards in Physics, Biology and World History. Michael is very active in his community, by helping with food drives, volunteering at events, and serving his church.
"He has a work ethic that drives him to succeed in everything that he does. Everything that I've seen him attempt to do he's accomplished through hard work. I remember when he was a freshman…And after his freshman football season I remember him being in the weight room every day after school…And that summer leading up to his sophomore year, because he wanted to be on varsity his sophomore year. He put in the work and the time to make that happen. And having him in the classroom for two years I've seen the exact same thing in the classroom. If he wants to ace a test, he works until he aces that test.
Michael is very wise with his time and he manages time very very well. And I think that's what allows him to do the things he does in the classroom as well as do the things that he does out here. I think Michael's just one of those guys that's intrinsically motivated and I think that helps. He has very high standards for himself; not only academically but athletically. He's a guy that will always come in after practice and put in extra work in the weight room and things like that."
"Being an athlete, being a student at athlete at that is hard at times, but you know what needs to be done. You just have to do it, and you push yourself to that extra degree, as the school likes to say. It is difficult…It's not easy at all getting to a state championship …Being there last year I know is helping us; because we k now what dedication it takes to get there again. And how much hard work we have giving.
After high school, Michael plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in engineering.
Congratulations to Michael Gelner of Cameron Yoe High School. This week's News 3 Sports Classroom Champion!
