Classroom Champions 12/30- Meg Cowden

News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest classroom champion Meg Cowden. The St. Michael's Episcopal school senior has a 3.44 Grade point average and has already receive several college credit hours through AP exams and dual enrollment at Blinn College.

Meg volunteers with at the Food Pantry, the Salvation Army and Park Clean up. She works with habitat for Humanity and is also the Student Council vice president.

Violet Slowey, Meg's teacher says she is a pleasure to work with. "She's a really patient person and she's willing to work really hard. It's really nice to work with someone like that. A lot of kids get senioritis their senior year and it seems like instead of slacking off and starting to think 'Oh I don't really want to do this anymore,' she's really decided to push herself really hard this last year and learn as much as she possibly can, even if it's not something she's going to pursue in college, she still wants to do the best she can, so I'm really impressed with that."

Athletically, Meg is the volleyball team captain and plays basketball and soccer. She's also received the track award for her contributions to St. Michael's Track and Field team.

"Meg means a great deal to St. Michaels's basketball. She's definitely the definition of a leader. She leads by example; she's a very hard worker and she has a tremendous energy out on the court. She's never one to take a play off; she's always giving it her all. She's very encouraging. She's always trying to encourage and pick up her teammates. Maybe in a time of difficulty or adversity, she's always encouraging with kind words and just a real leader out on the floor for us," says St. Michael's Girl's Head Basketball Coach Clint Hardnen.

Meg has to make time for both school and sports. "I have to be able to balance my school work and my athletics, so I have to be able to pick priorities, but I still make time for both of them. It's given me more of a work ethic....before I just did homework whenever, but now I have to have time for homework and for athletics."

Meg hasn't decided where she wants to continue her educations, but she's applied to several colleges and plans on majoring in Art and Classical Studies.

Congratulations to Meg Cowden of St. Michael's Episcopal School. This week's News 3 Sports Classroom Champion.
