Posted: Fri 12:27 PM, Mar 09, 2012

It’s time now to crown another Classroom Champion and this week we congratulate Andy Baxter of Franklin High School.

News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest classroom champion Andy Baxter. The Franklin High School senior has a 4.0 grade point average, and is currently ranked number one in his class.

Andy is a member of the football team and a member of the tennis team. He was selected 2nd Team All District in Football as a defensive tackle…In tennis, Andy is a state qualifier, and he placed second in the district in the boys doubles. Academically, Andy’s a member of the National Honor Society, UIL, FFA, and the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. He’s also the senior class president and in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Andy is active in his community and his church.

“He almost always is the first one in a group to grasp a concept or understand how to work a problem. But when he talks to other kids, he never talks down to them. When he makes a mistake he never pouts, throws a fit, or argues about it. He just goes on; and that's really unusual in a high school kid."

“He's probably one of our best leaders. He was a real leader for us in football, and he's been a real leader for us out in tennis. He's been playing since he was in the seventh grade. He leads by example. He's one of those kids that comes early, stays late and does the all the things that you ask him to do. He's one that just takes the initiative. So, he's been a real asset to us."

“Being a scholar athlete does have its difficulties, especially bouncing the time between on another. But, I feel like the reward is great because you get to use things that you learn in one place and put it to another. Not necessarily book learning, but things that you learn like dedication and devotion, and respect and all those things. They can be applied to both the classroom and on the field. It's sometimes hard, but it's definitely a very fun way to spend four years of high school."

Andy plans on attending Texas A&M University and double majoring in Physics and Aerospace Engineering.

Congratulations to Andy Baxter of Franklin High School. This week’s News 3 Sports Classroom Champion!
