News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest classroom champion Tanner Steenken. The Burton High School senior has a 3.2 Grade point average and a member of Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society.

Tanner is the Vice president of the senior class, a member of the Beta Club, FFA and is the 4-H vice president. Tanner is on the Livestock judging team, shows barrows and was awarded the Lone Star Chapter Farmer Degree at the State FFA Convention.

"Tanner's a hard worker, he's a great student to have in class. He does really well and helps other students learn and he's just a good leader. That's really going to help him in life, just the ability to work with peers and work with other individuals, rather than just having to work by yourself or something like that."

Athletically, Tanner plays football, golf and is the shortstop for the Burton Panther baseball team. He was named first team all district in both football and baseball and was a regional finalist in golf his junior year.

"Knowing that he can take what he learns out there and how he learns in the classroom and establish it out on the field - he gets in a routine where he knows 'I can carry stuff over from the classroom, even though it is dealing with just education, I can carry it out onto the sports field and maybe even later on in life.' It's kind of nice to have that kind of person that can carry things over from one subject to another and still be that type of leader and that type of student athlete."

"Everybody tells me I'm funny and I joke around a lot. I have that sense of humor and since I bring that to practice it's relaxing and not so uptight and it seems like whenever that happens, everybody is in a flow and does well. As a junior, I was looking forward to leading the baseball team, just being a role model for the kids coming up and the future sports at Burton."

Tanner is unsure of what his next step is, but is considering a major in sports medicine.
