Designated player Brittney Lewis hit a grand slam home run in the top of the first inning to power Stephen F. Austin to a 6-2 victory over Sam Houston in the final regular season softball game for both teams Sunday afternoon at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The victory gave SFA a series victory after the two teams split a doubleheader Wednesday. The Lumberjacks upped their record to 24-25 for the year and 14-11 in Southland action. Sam Houston fell to 26-25 for the regular season and 15-11 in league play.
With one out in the first, SFA’s Cadie Weaver, Shalie Day and Katelyn Standley hit consecutive singles. Lewis followed up with the grand slam to put the Jacks up 4-0 before Sam Houston came to bat. The Jacks added two unearned runs in the top of the third.
Sam Houston got solo home runs from third baseman Tori Koerselman in the first inning and center fielder Cecilia Castillo in the fourth inning.
Shelby Lancaster (10-9) took the loss in the circle. Haley Baros entered the game with one out in the first and pitched the rest of the way.
Next for the Bearkats is the Southland Conference tournament in Hammond, La. The event begins Thursday.
