Sam Houston Men Lead Southland Golf After 36 Holes

MCKINNEY, Texas -- Led by junior Zach Cabra and senior Albert Miner, Sam Houston State held off a charge by Stephen F. Austin to take a 10-stroke lead into Wednesday’s final 18 holes at the 2014 Southland Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

The tournament is being held at the par 72, 7,346-yard course at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.

Cabra stands second in the individual medalist standings with a six-under 69-69—138 two-day total. Miner is in fifth place individually at even par with a 71-73—144 card.

The Bearkats lead with a 36-hole total of 582. Stephen F. Austin is in second place at 592, followed by Southeastern Louisiana 594, Central Arkansas 596 and McNeese State 598.

Lamar is in sixth place with a 604 total. Rounding out the 12-team field are Houston Baptist 610, Abilene Christian 612, Oral Roberts 623, Incarnate Word 624, Nicholls 634 and New Orleans 638.

Cabra posted three birdies and only one bogie to finish the front nine with 34 strokes. He added two more birdies and had one bogie to fire a 35 on the back nine for his second 69 of the tournament.

During Miner’s round, the senior totaled three birdies and four bogies for a 35 front nine and 38 on the final nine holes.

Pep Angeles of Central Arkansas leads the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 68-68—136. Angeles earned Southland Conference “Player of the Year” honors in 2012-13.

Sam Houston is seeking its third Southland championship and first since 1994. Southeastern Louisiana is the defending champion.

Play in Wednesday’s final round begins with teams teeing off at 8 a.m. The final pairings will include Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and Southeastern Louisiana with tee times set between 8:40 a.m. and 9:12 a.m.
