HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Two-time All-Southland Conference outside hitter Deveney Wells-Gibson started the 2014 season on a roll as she led the Bearkats to a quick three-set victory over the University of Louisiana at Monroe in the opening match of the Sam Houston Volleyball Invitational Friday afternoon.
The Kats dispatched the Warhawks 25-16 25-21 25-22 in an hour and 23 minutes as Wells-Gibson led both teams with 14 kills.
Shelby Genung added seven kills as the Bearkats out-pointed ULM 44-36. Michelle Griffith assisted on 32 of Sam Houston’s 37 kills in her first match as the team’s starting setter.
Wells-Gibson and libero Claire Kilpatrick led the defense with nine digs apiece.
With the first set tied 7-7, a kill by Wells-Gibson started a 6-2 run by Sam Houston. The Warhawks could never come closer than four points the rest of the set.
ULM jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the second set, but Sam Houston rallied to win 19 of the next 28 points to go up two sets to one. The Bearkats trailed only once in the third set.

Sdney Haynes totaled 18 kills and Kelsee Sawyer added 12 more to lead the Roadrunners to a 25-15 25-17 25-15 victory over Mississippi State in the second match of the tournament.
Alex Warren led the Bulldogs with nine kills
After a first set that saw five lead changes before CSUB pulled away, the Roadrunners trailed only one time in the final two sets.
