Six Bearkats have been named to the 2014 All-Southland Conference squad.

Catcher Tiffany Castillo is a second team selection while first baseman Sarah Allison, shortstop Tayler Gray and pitcher Shelby Lancaster were named to the third team.

Designated player Hillary Adams and pitcher Haley Baros were honorable mention selections.

The six All-Southland honorees combined to lead Sam Houston to a 26-25 overall regular season record and a third place finish in the 2014 Southland race with a 13-8 league mark.

Each of the Bearkat honorees is a repeat All-Southland honor winner.

Adams, a junior from Elgin, is a three-time all-leaguer, receiving first team recognition in 2013 and second team as a freshman in 2012. Adams, who became Sam Houston’s all-time home run hit (30) this spring, hit .311 in Southland play.

Castillo, a sophomore from Port Lavaca Calhoun, received third team recognition at shortstop last season. She produced a .304 batting average and led SHSU in RBIs (49) in Southland play.

Allison, a junior from College Station A&M Consolidated, was voted all-league as a shortstop in 2012. She was the Kats’ second-leading hitting in conference games with a .313 batting average.

Lancaster, a senior from Tomball, was an honorable mention pitcher her sophomore season in 2012. She produced a 9-4 record in the circle in league games this year.

Baros, a junior from Bay City, received third team honors in the circle last season. She posted a 2.35 earned run average in Southland play this year in 14 conference games.

Gray, who has earned All-Southland Conference twice in volleyball, becomes a two-sport all-league honoree with her third team selection at shortstop. The senior Huntsville product produced a .473 slugging percentage in conference action in 2014.

Sam Houston begins competition in the 2014 Southland Conference softball tournament Thursday at North Oak Park in Hammond, La., with game one starting at 11 a.m. McNeese State won its fourth regular-season title and is the No. 1 seed. Defending champion Northwestern State is the No. 2 seed and will be in search of its fifth tournament title. The tournament fields a six-team double elimination format with the winner punching its ticket to the NCAA tournament.
