The Sam Houston baseball team had a 3-2 lead before allowing five runs in the seventh inning and falling 7-4 to Oral Roberts in the series opener. The loss is the Bearkats’ (19-11, 4-6) sixth out of the last seven Southland games.
Starter Tyler Eppler had allowed just two runs through the first six innings but couldn’t hold the lead in the seventh. A leadoff single was sacrificed to second and driven in on a single by catcher Audie Afenir.
With the game tied 3-3, Alan Scott came out of the bullpen and walked the bases loaded and was replaced by Seth Holbert. Shortstop Jose Trevino drove in the go ahead runs with a single to left field. Second baseman Matt Brandy put the game away with a two-run double.
The Bearkats had plenty of scoring opportunities but were unable to get the big hits with multiple runners on base. SHSU left 10 runners on base while ORU left just five runners on.
After Oral Roberts scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning, first baseman Dylan Ebbs tied the game up with a two-run double in the next half inning. Shortstop Corey Toups gave the Kats the lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Catcher Anthony Azar scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.
Andrew Godail pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and kept the Golden Eagles off the board.
The second game of the series is Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and the finale is Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
