Tight end Shane Young and kicker Luc Swimberghe of Sam Houston State University have been included on preseason watch lists for FCS post-season awards.
Swimberghe, a sophomore from Tyler / Lindale High School, has earned a spot on the 2014 College Football Performance Awards FCS placekicker award watch list.
Young, a senior from Lago Vista, is on the 2014 CPFA FCS tight end award watch list. The initial watch lists include 36 returning performers, vying the award as the top player at their respective position.
The full list of 2014 CFPA winners will be announced January 14, 2015.
Swimberghe was the leading scorer for Sam Houston in 2013 with 97 points (eight field goals and 73 successful point-after attempts. His 97 points stand as the third-highest kick-scoring total by a Bearkat special teams player.
Young earned honorable mention All-Southland tight end honors in 2013. He started 13 games, catching 11 passes for 151 yards including touchdowns in both the Texas Southern and Stephen F. Austin victories.
Sam Houston State opens the 2014 football season at Cheney, Washington, when the Bearkats take on Eastern Washington in a nationally-televised contest on ESPN Saturday, August 23.
The new “FCS Kickoff” will be the only college game of the day and will open ESPN’s 2014 college football coverage.
The Bearkats open their 2014 home schedule Saturday August 30 by hosting Alabama State. Sam Houston will play five contests in Huntsville at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium this fall.
Season tickets for all five games at Bowers Stadium plus the “Battle of the Piney Woods” at Reliant Stadium in Houston Nov. 1 are now on sale online at www.gobearkats.com and at the SHSU athletic ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field House.
