TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama coach Nick Saban says the secondary went through "some painful times" last season.

Now, the Crimson Tide unit that has been a training ground for NFL prospects is bolstered by a familiar position coach and two of the nation's top cornerback recruits.

Defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is back working with the secondary. Freshmen Tony Brown and Marlon Humphrey could contribute early to a group led by safety Landon Collins.

Saban says last year's secondary was the most inexperienced he's had at Alabama.

Brown went through spring practice and is contending for a starting job along with Bradley Sylve and Cyrus Jones, who was adjusting to the transition from receiver last season.

Sugar Bowl starter Eddie Jackson is working his way back from spring knee surgery.
