The South Carolina football program is coming off on an 11-2 season in 2013. It was the third straight 11 win season for the Gamecocks. It is the first time in program history South Carolina has won 11 games in three consecutive seasons. The Gamecocks finished the 2013 season ranked number four in the country.
This season South Carolina has 16 starters returning. With that experience coming back the Gamecocks have a chance for another special season but head coach Steve Spurrier feels his team still has to play well each week. "We think we have a chance but we are not a lot greater than any other team. We are at a probably pretty even level with most people we play so if we are going to win we have to go outplay them that day. We can't just show up and think we are supposed to win. We have to outplay the opponent."
Dylan Thompson will take over at quarterback this season. He replaces Connor Shaw who threw 24 touchdown passes last season. The Gamecocks have four starters back on the offensive line. Running back Mike Davis is back as well after rushing for 1,183 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
Defensively South Carolina will have to replace Jadeveon Clowney who was the number one pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. The Gamecocks do have six starters back from last year's unit that was second in the SEC in scoring defense giving up 20 points per game.
South Carolina will open the 2014 season at home August 28 against Texas A&M. It will be the first football game to air on the new SEC Network.
