Little, Villarreal advance to finals during USATF Junior Championships

EUGENE – A pair of Aggies, Shamier Little and Cameron Villarreal, advanced to the final of their respective events during Saturday’s action at the USATF Junior Championships held at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.

Little won her heat of the women’s 400 hurdles in a comfortable 59.44 to reach Sunday’s final. Little, the 2014 world junior leader with her Texas A&M school record of 55.07, posted the fourth best time of the day of the eight hurdlers advancing to the final. Each of the three heat winners automatically made the final along with the next five fastest times.

Villarreal ran 3:52.40 to place third in his heat of the 1,500m and qualified for the 12-person final on Sunday. Villarreal finished behind Virginia Tech’s Patrick Joseph (3:52.05) and Stanford’s Thomas Coyle (3:52.39). The top three in each of the two heats automatically advanced along with the next six fastest times.

Ebony Crear, an incoming A&M freshman this fall, competed in both the 100 and 400 hurdles, but didn’t advance to the final in either race. She ran in the same heat at Little in the 400 hurdles, placing fourth with a time of 1:01.12. In the 100 hurdles Crear clocked a windy 13.99 (2.4 wind) for sixth place in her heat.

Among a field of 22 entrants in the men’s pole vault incoming A&M frosh Audie Wyatt was one of 10 vaulters who didn’t clear the opening height of 16-0.75 (4.90).

In addition to Little and Villarreal competing on Sunday at the USATF Juniors, another pair of Aggies will be in action with Jeffrey Prothro in the triple jump and Austin Wells running the 10,000 meters.

The women’s pole vault will include a pair of incoming freshmen for A&M in Emily Gunderson and Sara-Kathryn Stevens.
