Three Bearkats Voted To All-Southland Conference Women's Soccer Squad
Reporter: Southland Conference Office
PLANO -- Tofi Chavez was named to All-Southland Conference women's soccer second team and Raquel Bueno and Yoanna Garcia of Sam Houston State both received honorable mention honors for the 2006 season.
The 2006 Southland Conference women's soccer honor squad was announced Wednesday as the league's post-season tournament begins.
Chavez, a midfielder from Houston Hastings, scored two goals and assisted on another, ranking second on the squad in shots with 37. Both Chavez's goals came in an 11-0 victory over Prairie View A&M. Chavez took 19 shots in Southland Conference play in 2006. Last year, she was an all-tournament selection at the SLC post-season event.
Bueno, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, scored four goals and assisted on two other goals during the season. She led the Bearkats with 55 shots. Two of Bueno's goals came during Southland league play as she scored the goal in Sam Houston's only SLC victory this year, a 1-0 win over Texas State-San Marcos, and in Sam Houston's 1-0 loss to SLC regular season champion Southeastern Louisiana.
Bueno also scored in a 3-2 overtime loss at Centenary and in an 11-0 victory over Prairie View A&M. Bueno was the "Most Valuable Player" in last year's Southland Conference post-season tournament after leading the fourth-seeded Kats to the finals.
Garcia led the 2006 Bearkats in scoring with six goals. Four came in an 11-0 victory over Prairie View. The junior from Temple also scored the winning goal in Sam Houston's 1-0 season-opening overtime victory against Mississippi State and tallied in a 2-1 loss at TCU.
Garcia only played in one match during Southland Conference play, going out with an injury in a loss to Stephen F. Austin in the league opener. She missed the rest of the season.
