Sam Houston Starts Season 2 - 0

HUNTSVILLE -- Freshman Alexis Green and sophomore LaToya Bennett each scored 14 points to lead Sam Houston State to a 65-56 non-conference women's basketball victory over LSU-Shreveport at Johnson Coliseum Tuesday night.

With the victory, Sam Houston State is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 1988. The Bearkats opened last Saturday with a victory over Texas Southern.

Another freshman, Whitney Smith, added 10 points for Sam Houston. LSU-Shreveport (2-2) was led by Kacie Cryer with 20 points.

Sam Houston State never trailed, jumping out to a 10-3 on Whitney Smith's jumper with 15:08. The Bearkats led by nine at halftime, 28-19. For the game, the Bearkats shot 45.5 per cent from the field, hitting 25 of 55 field goals.

Sam Houston won the battle of the boards with 48 rebounds to the Pilots' 31. Kendall Homesley led SHSU with 10 rebounds.
