BRENHAM, Texas -- The battle for the 17-4A championship was all Cubs, as Brenham shut down Houston Stratford 28-3 to wrap up a perfect regular season.
The Cubs scored twice in the first quarter and twice in the third quarter and used a solid defense to keep the Spartans to a field goal.
Klartel Claridy ran for 11 and two yard touchdowns to help the Cubs jump out to an early 14-0 lead.
Stratord threatened in the second quarter, but kicker Alonso Acosta dropped what would have been a touchdown on a fake field goal. A roughing the passer penalty gave the Spartans another shot for six, but they settled for a field goal to go into halftime down 14-3.
Brenham wasted little time putting it away in the third. Quarterback Dean Havemann snuck in from a yard out to make it a 21-3 game, then, after the Cubs recovered a fumble, Haveman found Tyler Watts on a 29-yard scoring strike to give the game its final margin of 28-3.
The Cubs complete their second straight undefeated regular season and will take on Kingwood Park in the Bi-District round of the playoffs. That ballgame will likely be at Cub Stadium.
