BRYAN -- A week after a majority of high school football teams in the Brazos Valley hit the field the Bryan Vikings and A&M Consolidated Tigers practiced for the first time this fall Monday.

The Tigers worked out early this morning and will continue early morning workouts leading up to their first scrimmage August 24 against Stoney Point and the season opener August 31 against Copperas Cove.

At Bryan Ross Rogers returned to the field for the first time since retiring in 2006.

"I feel like it's 1977 Hempstead," Rogers joked before practice, referring to his first head coaching job.

Although he's been on the field for plenty of "first practices" the excitement is still there for the latest go-round at Bryan High. "Starting in January when I got the job, this is something that I felt like I wanted to end up doing. Hopefully we can get things turned around for the Vikings and have a lot of success in the next few years. Of course we've got to start at the foundation, so it's not all about the varsity. It's about what we do with the young kids and we're certainly going to spend time with our freshmen as well as our middle schoolers."

The Vikings scrimmage at Cedar Ridge on August 24 and host Waco Midway in their season opener August 31.
