CALDWELL, TX -- Chance Locklear takes over as the new head coach of the Caldwell Hornets, and has six returning starters on offense and five on defense to work with.

The Hornets have to replace a solid corps of graduating seniors on offense, including quarterback D.J. Cumby and honorable mention all-state running back Kedrin Sheppard.

DeAndre Burns looks to fill Sheppard’s (who rushed for 1,706 yards and 27 touchdowns) shoes at running back, and he will have three returning starters on the line to block for him.

“This team will be young offensively and defensively and will have to grow up quickly to be successful this year,” says Locklear. Three starting linemen return and should make the line the biggest strength of the defense.

23-3A should be a very good district once again in 2011, meaning the Hornets will have their work cut out for them if they want to return to the playoffs.

Giddings, Navasota, and Rockdale will be Caldwell’s biggest threats in the district, and getting to face the Rattlers and Tigers at home could be key to the Hornets getting back into postseason play.
