BRYAN -- The Vikings return five starters on offense and five more on defense as they look to reach the postseason for the third year in a row.
Junior Chris Johnson and senior Zach Alvarado each got some time at quarterback a year ago and will battle for the starting job this fall. The Vikings have to replace all-district performers Nate Jones and Chris Watson from the backfield, and Kevin Jefferson will get the nod after spending most of 2010 at receiver. Tim Hines and Keith Lewis return but the offensive line and the receiver position are question marks. “We will have to find a reliable receiver or two and find depth in the offensive line,” said head coach Bob Bellard.
Hunter Maphet and Johnny Childs will lead an undersized defense. “We are not very big on defense,” says Bellard, “and we have to grow up in the secondary quick as three of the top six are sophomores.”
The Vikings should be in the mix for another postseason berth, and if the young players find their footing early Bryan could contend for the 12-5A championship.
