GROESBECK, Texas -- Lexington overcame an early deficit and scored a pair of defensive touchdowns on long fumble returns to beat New Waverly 31-7 in the 2A Division II Area playoffs Friday.
New Waverly got on the board first on a 56-yard Mike Singleton touchdown run, but it was all Eagles after that.
Kogan Garrett found Jason Washington on a 40-yard score to pull Lexington within 7-6, then the defense got in the act as A.J. Flot recovered a Cole Bohannon fumble and returned it 102-yards to put the Eagles ahead to stay.
Lexington led 12-7 at the half and busted it open in the third. A Garrett quarterback keeper made it 18-7, then Washington returned a fumble 28-yards to put the game out of reach at 24-7. Garrett scored again on the first play of the fourth quarter to give the game its 31-7 final score.
The Eagles (9-2) advance to the regional round next Friday against District 12 rival Franklin at Tigerland Stadium in College Station. Lexington beat the Lions 28-19 in Franklin in the regular season.
New Waverly wraps up their season with a 6-6 record.
