IOLA, TX -- Stating "personal reasons" longtime Iola football coach Roddy McDougald has announced he is resigning as the Bulldogs Head Football Coach.
McDougald took over the Bulldog program in 2008 after they had gone win less in 2007. He didn't have much luck in his first two seasons -producing a pair of 1-9 seasons. Last year Iola went 6-4, but lost out on possibly making the playoffs by 7 points.
"There is always good and bad in everything," said McDougald when ask about why he is leaving.
"My magic number to be able to retire is one, so I'm going to focus teaching this next year and then see how things go," added McDougald.
Roddy has been associated with the Iola ISD for nearly his entire life. He grew up in Iola, playing high school football during his high school years.
He came back about 20 years ago and was the defensive coordinator for brother Randy for 15 years, which produced some of the most successful years in school history. With the McDougald brothers running the Bulldog offense and defense, Iola advance to the Class A semifinals twice, and to the quarterfinals two other times as well.
The torch is being passed to another Iola product. Scott Bishop will take over for the younger McDougald. Scott was the Bullodgs' offensive and defensive line coach for the past three seasons. he was a three year letter winner on the Iola football team in 1996, 97, & 98.
