NAVASOTA, Texas -- Navasota dominated Smithville 47-18 in a battle of 23-3A unbeatens to take control of the district race.
Kadarius Baker and Austin Baumert got the scoring started on a 20-yard connection in the first quarter to give the Rattlers a 6-0 lead. They doubled the advantage on a one-yard Baker quarterback keeper later in the first.
Navasota built a 26-0 halftime lead, thanks a six-yard Howard Horn touchdown run and a 52-yard Jacob Malek interception return for a touchdown. The Rattler defense forced three first half fumbles and kept the Tigers from threatening until the fourth quarter.
The Rattlers (8-1, 4-0) claim at least a share of the District 23-3A title and can win it outright with a victory at Giddings (7-2, 3-1) next week.
Smithville (7-1, 3-1) suffers their first loss of the year and will host La Grange (3-6, 2-2) to wrap up the regular season.
