DALLAS (AP) - Aledo High School running back Johnathan Gray has been named The Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Player of the Year for 2011.
The award was announced Friday, a day before Gray was to play his final high school game, already assured of being the second-most prolific back in Texas history.
Gray enters Saturday's Class 4A Division II championship game at Cowboys Stadium against Manvel with 10,648 yards. That trails Kenneth Hall, dubbed the Sugar Land Express when he rushed for 11,232 yards for his Houston-area school from 1950-53.
The Texas-bound Gray is unlikely to surpass Hall's hallowed mark, but has quite a few of his own records. That includes a championship game mark of eight touchdowns when Aledo won its second straight state title last year.
