Tigers Avoid "Trap Game" Against Shoemaker, Post 37-0 Win

COLLEGE STATION, TX -- The A&M Consolidated Tigers (4-3, 4-0) avoided the "trap game" of the winless Shoemaker Greywolves (0-7, 0-4) Friday night by responding with a 37-0 win at Tigerland Stadium.

After their win over Bryan in the Crosstown Showdown last week and the impending duel with 12-5A co-leader Copperas Cove next week, Head Coach David Raffield warned his team of the pitfalls of living in the past as well as looking ahead and not taking care of the present. "It was a focal point all week long," Raffield said on Thursday.

His kids must have heard the message loud and clear, by jumping on winless Shoemaker for 16 first quarter points.

Brett Mahnke recorded the team's 2nd safety of the year (Marshall Strain was credited with the first in the season opener against Klein Oak), tackling Greywolves running back Johnny Jefferson in the end zone on Shoemaker's first offensive play.

Things only got worse for first year head coach Channon Hall's team after that. A&M Consolidated senior running back Quinton White scored on runs of 1 and 34 yards to increase the Tigers lead to 16-0.

In the 2nd quarter, Weston Garner, filling in for injured Tiger quarterback Jacob Bronowski, threw a pass over the middle to Josh Potter that resulted in a 44 yard score, giving A&M Consolidated a 23-0 halftime lead.

In the 2nd half, the Tigers posted two more scores, while the Consol defense kept Shoemaker from putting any points on the board which resulted in the Tiger D's second shutout on the season.

"That is an amazing feat for a defense," said Raffield. "It is very difficult in this league to get a shutout. To get two in district play, I've never had that happen in my career," concluded the first year Tiger Head Coach.

For the Greywolves, Friday's loss extends their losing streak to 29 in a row. Hall and company will take on Temple Thursday night in Killeen hoping to end the skid that dates back to the 2008 season.

Up next for A&M Consolidated is a long bus ride to Copperas Cove to take on the Bulldawgs for the outright lead in 12-5A. "It should be a special night, Tigers are going to have to play our best game of the year," said Raffield after his 4th straight district win. "We're going to work hard this week to do it. I'm excited to play Cove," wrapped up Raffield.
