Sam Houston State Volleyball Team Extends Winning Streak

Huntsville -- Sam Houston State volleyball fans got a look at the future Tuesday night when the Bearkats defeated Texas Southern in three games in the final non-conference match of the 2007 season for SHSU.

Senior outside hitter Cynthia Yarotsky took a seat on the bench in the
second and third game and let the younger players take over for the
Bearkats.

Sophomore Kattie Phillips led the youngsters with 11 kills in 22 attempts,
adding four service aces.

Two more freshmen, Sarah Hazlewood and Lizzy Stuller added eight and seven kills, respectively, as Sam Houston upped its record to 8-6 with a 30-26 30-17 30-20 victory.

The Bearkats totaled 50 kills to just 34 for the Tigers. Krystal Obi led
Texas Southern with eight kills.

Freshman setter Kym Loving ran the floor in the final two games, picking up 28 assists. The Bearkats totaled nine blocks, led by Phillips with five block assists.

Sam Houston, off to a 2-0 start in Southland Conference play, return to
league action Thursday at 7 p.m. when the Kats play host to Texas-San
Antonio at Johnson Coliseum.

The Bearkats have won four matches in a row.
