COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Aggie football team went through two practices on Saturday, the morning workout outside in full pads and came back in the afternoon working inside the McFerrin Athletic Center in shorts and helmets.
"I thought today went well," Texas A&M head football coach Mike Sherman said. "I thought we made some progress. The players are working hard and getting better each day. It was hot and humid this morning and the guys handled it. They were fatigued but they fought thru and handled it showing a little more maturity."
The Aggies will hold a scrimmage on Kyle Field on Sunday beginning at 10:30 a.m. the only gate open at Kyle Field will be through Gate 5 at the southwest corner of the stadium between Netum Steed and the first deck on the press box side of the stadium. Regular practice policy for admittance is in effect, students, former students with Aggie rings, 12th Man Foundation members with their ID card, faculty and staff with their A&M ID as well as player's families.
Watching practice this weekend is a group of Kickoff Campers, a sort of fantasy camp, that allows access to team meetings, position meetings and practices. The concept started back in 1993 under R.C. Slocum, the winningest coach in Aggie and SWC history. That first group had 47 participants and the money raised went to the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band and the Evans Library. Other groups have been added through the years and the total amount of donation is over $1 million dollars. This 18th year, 112 participants are taking advantage of the weekend festivities. Among the group are 11 Aggie lettermen, the ages range from 13 up to 82 with four members of the group age 80 and above. Included in the group are several father and sons, and even a grandfather and grandson combination. Seven individuals have attended each and every camp and a couple of former yell leaders are also in the mix. There are 21 first-year attendees and 13 have attended 15 years or more.
All 112 participants are special to Coach Sherman and Aggie football, but included in this year's group are: Hall of Fame Coach R.C. Slocum; Shariq Yosufzai, Chairman of the Board for the Association of Former Students; Porter Garner, President and CEO of the Association of Former Students; Rick Rickman, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the 12th Man Foundation; Neal Adams, chair elect for the Board of Trustees for the 12th Man Foundation; Tommy Bain, Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association; and Tommy Lohman, a newly elected member to the 2010 Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame and Hall of Honor. Two other members of the Aggie Athletic Hall of Honor are also present, Arno Krebs and Tom Lyles.
Five members of the group have earned the honor of Distinguished Alumni for Texas A&M University: Shariq Yosufzai (1999), Jack Little (2000), Neal Adams (2008), Artie McFerrin (2008) and a 2010 inductee, Fred Palmer.
