COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The Aggie football team scrimmaged on Kyle Field Sunday staying on the field for approximately two hours.

“Overall, I thought it was a good job today and we made progress,” Texas A&M head football coach Mike Sherman said. “After the first series, I thought the defense stepped up its play. They did a good job of getting the offense in third and long situations and then getting off of the field. This tape will give us plenty to work on and I expect the players to correct the mistakes made today.”

Several defensive players made their presence known especially with pressure off of the edge from linebackers Von Miller and Jonathan Stewart.

The day began for the team by listening to the Reverend Dr. Rick Rigsby at the morning chapel before attending meetings and the scrimmage. Dr. Rigsby is a preacher and motivational speaker who has served on the Texas A&M faculty and was on the football staff as life skills coordinator and chaplain for Aggie head football coach R.C. Slocum.

A couple of outstanding former A&M defensive lineman for the Aggies attended the scrimmage on Sunday. Tank Marshall, an All-SWC defender and four-year letter winner for Aggie coach Emory Bellard, was drafted in the third round of the 1977 NFL draft by the New York Jets. Ray Childress, a four-year letterman under Coach Tom Wilson and Jackie Sherrill, was a first-round draft choice of the Houston Oilers in the 1985 NFL draft. Childress has a son, Wells, who is a walkon defensive lineman for the Aggies.

Ray Childress and former Texas A&M head coach and current Board of Regent member Gene Stallings are both part of the 2010 National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Football Hall of Fame.

The Aggies open the 2010 season on Sept. 4 against Stephen F. Austin with kick scheduled for 6 p.m. at Kyle Field. For ticket information, call 1-888-99-AGGIE (888-992-4443) or go to AggieAthletics.com and click on tickets.
