Aggies Fall In Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – Three Aggies were eliminated in the prequalifying round of 64 at the 2007 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championship held Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Senior Matt Bain (Georgetown, Texas), sophomore transfer Chris Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) each advanced with convincing wins over some of the nation’s best singles players in Saturday’s round of 128. Bain scored a straight-set victory over Cal Poly’s Darryn Young, 6-0, 6-2, while Chirico and Karimi claimed three-set victories over Ohio State’s Ty Schaub, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, and Cleveland State’s Ryan Hamning, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, respectively. Sophomore Brad Williams (Cape Town, South Africa) fell in the opening round to Samford’s Jordan Delass, 6-3, 7-5.

In round of 64 action, Bain dropped a three-setter to Montana State’s Kyle McDonald, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Chirico was later eliminated from the tournament with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 loss to Arizona’s Jay Goldman as well as Karimi with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set loss to UTSA’s Robin Fernandes, 6-1, 6-2. The ITA All-American is one of the toughest tournaments of the fall season and boasts top collegiate players from across the country.

A&M continues tournament play with the top doubles combinations of Bain and Jerry Makowski (Bradenton, Fla.) and Chirico and Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) entered in the qualifying doubles draw scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
