Bearkats No. 19 in NCAA Div. 1-FCS Poll

By  |

HUNTSVILLE -- Following a 39-3 loss to FBS Oklahoma State on Saturday, the Sam Houston State football dropped four spots in the polls this week. Voters for both the FCS Coaches Poll as well as the Sports Network Poll moved the Bearkats from No. 15 to No. 19.

Two other Southland Conference schools are in the rankings this week as well. McNeese State remains in the top 10 (FCS No. 7, SN No. 6) and Nicholls State makes a move up (FCS No. 18, SN No. 17) following a bye.

Montana holds onto the No.1 spot in the FCS Coaches Poll. Montana beat Weber State, 18-10, to keep its undefeated season alive. Montana received 668 points and 18 of 28 first place votes.

Also garnering first place votes were North Dakota State in second with 649 points and four first place votes, Massachusetts in third with five first place votes and 638 points and McNeese State in seventh with one first place vote and 536 points. Northern Iowa, Appalachian State, Southern Illinois, Wofford, James Madison and Youngstown State round out the top 10.

The biggest leap in the poll came when Richmond, who was No.25 in last week's poll, jumped 10 spots to No.15 after beating No.11 New Hampshire 45-38.

FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

The poll is available on the newly-created FCS web page that features the poll, conference scores and standings, and features on FCS programs and players. The Southern Conference oversees the poll and maintain the web site.

The Kats have been ranked as high as No. 14 this season. Their only two losses of the year have come at the hands of Oklahoma State and No. 3 North Dakota State. The Bearkats open SLC play this weekend when they take on Central Arkansas at Bowers Stadium.
