SAN MARCOS - Brenham's Jessica Weynand recorded her fourth double-double in five matches, and Texas State made only nine attack errors as a team in a quick 3-0 sweep (30-17, 30-16, 30-25) of Sam Houston State on Wednesday.
Weynand finished with 11 kills and a match-high 20 digs, pairing with Lawrencia Brown's 15 kills to lead an effective Texas State (10-6, 3-1 SLC) attack, as the Bobcats outhit the Bearkats (9-8, 3-2 SLC) by a .322-to-.105 margin.
Games one and two were nearly identical as Texas State broke away from a 9-6 lead in each and never trailed past the fourth point of each game. In the opening frame, an 11-4 run stretched the Bobcats' lead to 20-11, while in game two it was a 10-4 Texas State run that made it 19-10. The `Cats won each handily by scores of 30-17 and 30-16, giving Texas State the 2-0 lead at half time.
Sam Houston State refused to go down without a fight in game three, leading 11-9 and never falling behind by more than three points until forcing a tie at 19-19. From there Texas State staged a 6-2 run with the help of a pair of Brown kills to go up 25-21, and the Bearkats would never get closer than three points as Texas State completed the sweep with a 30-25 win.
Brown had a solid all-around performance for the Bobcats, finishing with eight digs and six blocks to go along with her 15 kills and .342 hitting percentage. Shelbi Irvin had a match-high 21 assists, while Kacey Wimpy chipped in with 13 digs for Texas State.
Cynthia Yarotsky and Brittanie Wallace each finished with 11 kills to lead Sam Houston State, with Yarotsky also tallying 18 digs. Megan McNamara led the Bearkats in assists with 18.
