Vikes Pluck Win From Eagles

The Bryan football team evened its District 13-5A record with a 30-to-14 win over Ellison Friday night at Viking Stadium.

The Eagles found paydirt early in a penalty flag-filled first quarter as Michael Holloway barreled up the middle from the 15 yard line. The touchdown wrapped up a 70 yard drive, and it gave the visitors their only lead of the night, 7-0.

Bryan knotted the score on a fake field goal in the first quarter, then took the lead on a 2 yard run by Monterrell Washington.

Ellison forged the final tie of the night at 14-14 in the second quarter.

The Vikings took the lead for good when Stan McGruder scooted in for a 33 yard touchdown. McGruder's TD capped off a three-play, 70 yard drive, and it made the new score 20-to-14.

Just before the break, the Big Blue increased its advantage as Gary Hammond made a nice catch of Garrison Kickham's low pass for the last touchdown of the night.

It was 27-to-14 Bryan at the intermission and the Vikes added a field goal in the second half for the 30-to-14 victory.

After the game, Bryan head coach Bob Bellard said, " We needed the win for our psyche and for everything, we have a two week break now so we can build on something from this point on. We got a very good performance from our football team. We faced a great football team, their quarterback is a great, great, great player and it's hard chasing him around all night, but we did a good job covering and I was proud of our kids."

Bryan is now 3-&-3 for the season and 1-&-1 in league play.

The Vikings are off until October 19th when they meet A&M Consolidated at Kyle Field.
