Bears Beat Bearkats

HUNTSVILLE -- Quarterback Nathan Brown completed 28 of 37 passes for 308 yards including touchdown passes of fiyr abd 16 yards to lead Central Arkansas to a 35-14 Southland Conference victory over Sam Houston State Saturday at Bowers Stadium.

Brown threw to 14 different receivers as he led the Bears to 476 total yards on 83 plays.

Bearkat quarterback Rhett Bomar completed 22 of 38 passes for 241 yards and one touchdowns.

Turnovers hurt Sam Houston State as the Bearkats lost one fumble and had two passes picked off.

The loss came in the Bearkats' 2007 Southland Conference opener. Sam Houston dropped to 2-3 for the year. The Bears are 2-3 and 1-1 in league play.

Sam Houston opened the scoring with a Chris Poullard six yard touchdown, driving 16 yards in three plays in the second minute of the game after recovering a Central Arkansas fumble.

But the Bears bounced back to take a 21-7 halftime lead with scoring runs by Brent Grims and Spencer Hebert to cap drives of 65 and 68 yards and a Brown to Charles Twilley TD pass 53 seconds before intermission to complete an 88 yard drive.

Bomar hit Trey Payne for a 17-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter.

Brown's 17-yard pass to Marquez Branson and an Hebert one-yard run accounted for UCA's final two tallies.
