College Station - The Texas A&M equestrian team will host New Mexico State University on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at N.W. ‘Dick’ Freeman Arena.
A&M (1-0) opened the season with a dominant 16-4 win over Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 30 in College Station. NMSU (1-0) is also undefeated, having won its season opener at home over Fresno State by a 7-3 margin.
Texas A&M won the first meeting between the two schools by a 12-4 margin last Feb. 17-18 in Fresno, Calif. The two schools’ western teams also faced off in the semifinals at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in April with A&M winning in a tiebreaker by a close three-point margin after riding to a 4-4 draw.
The competition will be a homecoming for the entire New Mexico State coaching staff. First-year head coach Andrea Hanson rode for the Texas A&M English team, and her NMSU head coach predecessor Pam Bruemmer, from 2001-04. NMSU western coach Ashley (Shiffler) Thompson was a big part of the reason A&M won Intercollegiate Horse Show Association western national championships in both 2003 and 2004. Assistant coach Emily Eastman, who was hired during the off-season, also rode English for Texas A&M from 2003-06.
Admission to all Texas A&M equestrian events is free of charge. The 12th Man Team Rewards Program will be in attendance to scan in its members as well.
Freeman Arena is located on the west side of FM 2818/Harvey Mitchell Parkway, approximately one mile north of University Drive.
