MIDLAND, Texas – Texas A&M senior All-American Jerry Makowski (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore transfer Chris Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.) reached the singles quarterfinals Friday at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.
Both Aggies won their opening-round matches winning third-set supertiebreakers. Makowski, ranked No. 34 nationally in the preseason ITA/FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, defeated St. Edward’s Brett Powers, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-6) and Chirico knocked off Texas’ Hubert Chodkiewicz, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-8). Meanwhile, sophomore Brad Williams (Cape Town, South Africa) lost to top-seeded and No. 20-ranked Blake Strode of Arkansas, 6-3, 6-2.
Makowski won his second match of the day with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over Rice’s Dennis Polyakov. Chirico followed suit with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) defeat of Baylor’s Attila Bucko in the round of 16. Both A&M players will face each other in the quarterfinals tomorrow with one advancing to the semifinals of the three-day tournament.
In doubles play, Williams combined with Arkansas’ Tyler Tarnasky and advanced to the second round after UCLA’s Ahmed Ismail and Nick Meister retired due to illness, 3-1.
